Y-Team
2026–27 Season
The Climb Youngstown Youth Climbing Team helps young athletes grow as climbers and individuals in a nurturing, secure environment, whether they're here for fun or training for competition.
Season assessment
Wed, Sept 9
5:30 PM
We encourage all Y-Team youth to attend our beginning of the season “assessment” on September 9th to make sure we place them on the proper team.
Competitive season
Sept – May
Off Season (June, July August). We expect to have youth signed up for the entire season and work with families if they need a month off for family vacations or other commitments.
Joining mid-season?
No Problem
Missed assessments or interested in joining mid-season, please reach out to murnie@climbyoungstown.com set-up an individual try-out to get youth placed on the proper team.
Recreational Team
For young climbers new to the sport but eager to advance. Build skills, technique, and confidence — and have fun climbing with our coaches, no competition required.
Development / Competitive Team
For youth climbing at a high level or committed to elevating their abilities. Athletes train for USA Climbing competitions and are encouraged to compete in at least one Qualifying Event.
Scholarships:
We never want pricing to stand in the way of any youth participating in our programs. We also offer a scholarship opportunity for families for whom cost is a barrier, which can include helping to coordinate rides or snacks for competitions or events. If this pricing doesn't fit your family's budget, please reach out to Josh Boyle at josh@climbyoungstown.com - we are happy to work with you to make sure families can continue climbing together.
More Information
-
We understand that paying for an entire season up-front does not work for every family so we bill monthly. Guardians/Parents will be billed on the first of every month. If you require to pause your youth’s membership during the season please email josh@climbyoungstown.com 30-days prior to pausing the team membership.

The regular season runs September–February in Bouldering, Top Rope / Sport, and Speed. Championship season runs March–July. We compete in Region 62, Division 6 (PA, OH, WV, IN, MI).
What we ask of competing athletes: participate in at least 1 Qualification Event, hold an active USAC Competitor membership (sign up at usaclimbing.org), and climb at least twice a week in the month before any competition.
Typical fees (estimates set by event hosts):
USAC Competitor membership — about $110
Qualification Events — $40–$100
Regionals & Divisionals — $100–$150
Nationals — $200 + $50 per event
Competition fees are due upfront at the time of entry. Prepare for additional travel expenses. If the competition is 2+ hours away and the start time is early morning, you may want to reserve a hotel room for your athlete and family. This is optional, but highly recommended to avoid a possible late arrival and to help your athlete become better mentally and physically prepared.
Competition day: bring climbing gear, water, snacks, and the team shirt. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the rules meeting to warm up. Team shirt is worn while competing (and team apparel when cheering teammates on). Athletes are expected to stay through awards — we always take a team picture after. If an event is 2+ hours away with an early start, a hotel night is optional but highly recommended.

Qualification Events are any USAC sanctioned events that are not regionals/divisionals/nationals. Our region consists of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Michigan. Qualification Events will be held in these states for you to participate in. You may also participate in Qualification Events outside our region but within our division (division 6) to qualify for Regionals. Non-USAC sanctioned events also exist, but do not count towards qualifying for championship events.
